Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment has teamed up with Oshidori to make a bid for a Nagasaki integrated resort – a land-based casino – according to iGB.
Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment and Oshidori International Development Co., Ltd. have joined forces to vie for the Nagasaki Prefecture Integrated Resort (IR) license.

Oshidori is a Japanese company aiming to develop an integrated resort in Sasebo, Nagasaki. The company is owned by investment firm Oshidori International Holdings.
Through this collaboration, IR developer and operator Mohegan stated that it aims to jointly build a world-class IR that will create a lively community for Nagasaki, making it a top tourism destination and residential option.
The upcoming IR project will be developed in accordance with Nagasaki Prefecture’s bidding selection process, expected to take place in the summer and fall of 2021.
“We are privileged to partner with MGE on this significant development opportunity,” said Alex Yeminiagian, President and CEO of Oshidori.
“Through our combined bid, we aim to highlight the rich culture and diversity of the Nagasaki region and anticipate the positive impact this project will have on the entire Kyushu region.”
Mario Kontomerkos, the head honcho of Mohegan, expressed his excitement about joining forces with Oshidori International. He highlighted their team’s unmatched expertise in securing licenses for integrated resorts in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
Kontomerkos further emphasized his belief that the integrated resort would bring positive impacts to the entire island of Kyushu.
He stated that Japan presents substantial growth opportunities that will contribute to the prosperity of the Kyushu economy. He also mentioned that their development strategy takes into account significant cross-marketing possibilities between the ‘Enlightenment Project’ in Korea and Kyushu, Japan.
“As operators of ten hotels across the globe, including one of the largest integrated resorts in the Western Hemisphere, we are eager to bring our know-how to this project,” he added.
Despite strong opposition within the Japanese legislature, the legislation permitting the development of integrated resort casinos in Japan was given the green light in July 2018.
In March 2019, development guidelines for integrated resorts were introduced, encompassing limitations on hotel size, conference facilities, and exhibition centers. Additionally, a rule was established that gambling facilities could not exceed 3% of the total property area.
A public consultation on these regulations was subsequently initiated in September 2019, allowing individuals to share their views on the proposed control measures.
