Sports wagering legislation in Maine has been rejected due to the governor’s disapproval. The governor’s veto of the bill, which would have permitted sports betting in the state, was sustained by the House of Representatives.
The House was asked to vote on the matter of whether the bill should be enacted despite the governor’s opposition. While the House voted in favor of the bill’s advancement, it did not secure the necessary supermajority to overturn the veto.
The vote was conducted with one representative absent, two vacancies, and several abstentions, resulting in the veto being upheld and the bill failing to become law. The Maine legislature has now designated Legislative Document 553 as “unsuccessful.”
Previously, the Maine Senate had voted to override the veto, and if the House had followed suit, the bill would have likely progressed and been enacted into law, despite the governor’s reservations.
