A court in Sweden has lowered the penalty given to a Kindred Group subsidiary that operates in the gambling sector.
Spooniker, the subsidiary, was originally ordered to pay SEK 100 million (approximately US$9.5 million) in 2020 for breaking Swedish rules on bonuses. The Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) concluded that several of Spooniker’s marketing initiatives should have been categorized as bonuses under the regulations. While Kindred disputed this understanding of the law, it modified its offerings to comply with the SGA’s instructions.
Kindred contested the SGA’s ruling in court. The penalty was then decreased to SEK 50 million by the court. The court has now further reduced the fine to SEK 30 million (about US$2.8 million) in a subsequent ruling. Kindred asserts that the regulations were ambiguous and subject to interpretation, and that no penalty should have been levied.
