The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) levied a substantial financial penalty against PointsBet, a well-known internet wagering platform, for failing to uphold responsible gaming practices. They were ordered to pay a significant sum of CAD $150,000 (approximately USD $108,600) due to multiple infractions.
Apparently, PointsBet fell short in providing adequate support to a gambler exhibiting warning signs. Additionally, they neglected to enforce a mandatory 24-hour waiting period after a user attempted to raise their deposit thresholds. Furthermore, they were disseminating promotional correspondence without obtaining explicit consent from recipients.
The AGCO emphasized that this sanction should serve as a stark reminder for PointsBet to prioritize responsible gaming measures. They underscored the significance of comprehensive engagement, encompassing staff education and the practical implementation of policies designed to safeguard at-risk players.
This instance is not the first occasion where the AGCO has taken disciplinary action against operators within Ontario. In the preceding August, they imposed a CAD $100,000 fine on Apollo Entertainment for comparable transgressions. They also pursued another operator in April 2023 with a CAD $70,000 penalty, demonstrating their commitment to enforcing responsible gaming protocols throughout the province.
A trio of internet gaming businesses, namely LeoVegas, Bunchberry Limited, and Mobile Incorporated Limited, were recently exposed for providing questionable slot machine games. It appears they were caught in the act of offering games that lacked proper verification and even utilizing some dubious game developers.
